The Second Tide
The shock isn’t that it’s hidden. It’s become the new norm.
Last month a frontier AI lab shipped a model that crossed a threshold researchers had pencilled in for years away. An agent booked travel, wrote the code, filed the report — work a person was paid to do eighteen months ago. It made the news for a day. Then the feed moved on. So did everyone else.
There was no smoking gun, because there was no letdown. There was the opposite problem. The thing arrived, performed roughly as promised, and slid into the ordinary before the week was out. And that is exactly why it’s worth your attention. Not the model. The fact that you barely felt it land.
The perturbation you stopped noticing
Step back from any single release and watch the system shake. Three years ago, the capabilities now sitting in a phone app were conference-stage speculation. Two years ago they were demos with caveats. Now they’re invoiced. The interval between “impossible” and “invoiced” is collapsing, and each time it collapses the shock is smaller — not because the leap is smaller, but because you’ve recalibrated what counts as normal. The activity isn’t hidden. It’s the most documented technological surge in history. The signal isn’t concealment. It’s that the alarm stopped going off.

More than fifty years ago, a writer warned that the future would start arriving faster than people could absorb it — and that the real damage wouldn’t come from any single change but from the rate of change outrunning our capacity to adapt. He called it future shock. He got one detail slightly wrong. The acute symptom isn’t panic. It’s numbness — the nervous system of a whole culture turning down the volume on a signal it can’t afford to keep reacting to. We are not shocked by AI. We’ve been shocked so continuously that we’ve stopped registering the shocks. That is the more dangerous condition, because it means the steepest stretch of the climb is the stretch we feel least. His name was Alvin Toffler; the book was Future Shock. He was not wrong, he was early.
The honest objection
The honest objection comes first, because a serious reader will raise it anyway. Most of what gets called an AI breakthrough is theatre — a valuation, a demo staged for a launch, a benchmark chosen to flatter. Focus your reading on the hype and you’re reading the weather, not the climate. So set the theatre aside as colour and look at the part a sceptic can’t wave away.
It isn’t the marketing. It’s that independent labs, in different countries, under different incentives — commercial, academic, national — are all climbing the same capability slope at once, and converging on the same place. And the people raising the alarm loudest are not the critics. They’re the builders: the researchers and lab heads who have every commercial reason to talk the risk down, and who instead keep moving their own timelines forward. A hype-cycle explanation can’t absorb that. Hype fades when the money gets nervous. This isn’t fading. The people closest to it are the ones least able to look away.
The rate of change should be the focus
Here is the discipline, the same one I argued last time. Don’t wait for the level to confirm what the delta is already telling you. By the time a capability is undeniable, it’s priced in — and the room to position ahead of it is gone. With this tide, “priced in” may carry more weight than a missed quarter; but I’ll keep that precise for now and stay on the discipline. An accelerating rate of change across independent systems is information in its own right, whether or not next month’s release contains anything that makes the news for more than a day. The incumbent’s mistake is always the same: waiting for a certainty that arrives exactly when acting on it no longer helps.
When two fronts meet
One more thing, then I’ll leave it. This is the second of two waves I’ve been watching. The first — the long, slow surfacing of the UAP record — I wrote about last time. This one is faster, steeper, and in plain sight. On their own, each is merely remarkable.
But waves don’t politely take turns. When two fronts arrive in phase, they don’t average out — they stack, and for a moment the crest stands higher than either wave could reach alone.
